DAY 1 (continued)

This was the start of a long day. We set off to Reykjavik to sort out cylinders and some kit (Brett - rock boots, side mount boys - a right cylinder, land rover - a roof rack). We drove round stopped at a burger bar, drove round some more, had a bit of a drive and ate some more fast food. It was a chaotic but relaxed start and Eric (our host) went out of his way to sort us out.

Silfra from the entrance point
The second dive was at Silfra. Even if you’re not a diver you should visit this place. Quite simply it is in a stunning setting and is, well, stunning - just out of this world.

Dive briefing at Silfra's entrance

We drove through snow-capped mountains to the national park and then walked down to the site. The water was as smooth as a mirror and crystal clear. It completely lived up to its reputation.

Touching two continents
This could possibly be the most ridiculous dive in the world. A profile which alternates every five meters from fifteen meters in depth to one meter in depth.

The dive is a slight drift along the fault line with rock wall on either side. The gully rises and falls every few meters, which alters the dive profile on a regular basis. The magic is in the water clarity which is Gin clear. It is so clear that at times it looks as though people are just suspended in mid-air and flying not diving.

Everyone got out with a huge grin and wishing it was not over (we go back on Wednesday).

Day one finished with a trip to the local dive centre to fill cylinders ready for the next day and a five am start for a five hour journey.
